Congresswoman shot by Sarah Palin

Or something like that, according to reports.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the horrible violence that took place today in Tucson. A young man, apparently named Jared Loughlin, open fired in a crowd that was gathered for some reason or another and included a judge and Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Among the victims was a nine-year-old girl, who died at the scene. Awful.

What else is awful is how people are immediately blaming Sarah Palin and the Tea Party for this attack. First of all, at this time, no one knows why the man did it (if he did) or if there were others involved. My guess—and it’s just a guess, of course—from what has been reported until now is that the man is horribly mentally disturbed.

I’m willing to bet his motivations were as politically motivated as John Hinckley, Jr., whose assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan was never blamed on Jimmy Carter. He’s a messed up dude who will plead insanity and live out the remainder of his days by updating his Wikipedia profile.

I just ask people to focus on what they know and stop the speculation until the facts come out. It’s the only decent thing to do during a crisis like this.

UPDATE: The Blog Prof thoroughly rounds up this thought. (h/t Instapundit)
